What is Alzheimer’s Disease?

Alzheimer’s disease is a type of dementia that causes difficulty with memory, thinking, and sometimes behavior. In fact, it is the most common form of dementia, accounting for 60 percent to 80 percent of all cases. As a progressive disease, with symptoms worsening over time, Alzheimer’s has no cure. However, we can improve the quality of life for those with Alzheimer’s and their loved ones.Whether your loved one is suffering from early-, middle-, or advanced-stage Alzheimer’s disease, Kensington Place provides the right specialized treatment, tools, environment, and compassion necessary to provide each individual the support they need. We love and care for your family as we do our own.

What are the stages of Alzheimer’s?

Alzheimer’s disease typically progresses slowly in three general stages — mild (early stage), moderate (middle stage), and severe (late stage). Since Alzheimer’s affects people in different ways, the timing and severity of dementia symptoms varies as each person progresses through the stages of Alzheimer’s differently.

What are the main causes of Alzheimer’s?

While the exact causes of Alzheimer’s disease aren’t fully understood, scientists believe that for most people Alzheimer’s disease is caused by a combination of genetic, lifestyle and environmental factors that affect the brain over time.

Less than 1 percent of the time, Alzheimer’s is caused by specific genetic changes that virtually guarantee a person will develop the disease. These rare occurrences usually result in disease onset in middle age.

We love and care for your family as we do our own.

Specialized Memory Care Communities

We believe that each resident deserves to live in a community that is best for them and their individual degree of memory loss. To ensure that our residents receive the most beneficial and appropriate care for their individual circumstances, we break our community into two different “neighborhoods.”

The Connections Neighborhood

An intimate and comfortable environment, Connections is designed for residents who are experiencing early-to-middle stages of Alzheimer’s. As such, the neighborhood is made to care for those who are showing increasing signs of memory loss.

  • Anxiety
  • Fear of getting lost
  • Isolation
  • Depression
  • Decreased confidence
  • Difficulty completing everyday tasks without reminders
  • Agitation and confusion in the later afternoon/early evening (“sun-downing”)

In Connections, we strive to help residents be independently engaged in their interactions and socialization, guiding them to find purpose and meaning each and every day. We stay attuned to our residents’ maximum cognitive abilities and recall in order to make the most of their strengths and abilities, supporting them and their families.

  • Fully secured
  • Comfortable home-like spaces
  • Areas for fresh air and sunshine
  • Pets welcome
  • Technology to monitor whereabouts

The Haven Neighborhood

Designed for those residents who are showing more advanced signs of memory loss, Haven provides peace and security for those with middle-to-late stages of Alzheimer’s.

  • Difficulty identifying family and friends
  • Difficulty managing daily activities
  • Difficulty maintaining good hygiene
  • Agitation and confusion in the later afternoon/early evening (“sun-downing”)

Since these individuals require more assistance and a higher level of care, we strive to create a safe and soothing space with minimal agitation and an abundance of compassion.

  • Fully secured
  • Technology to monitor whereabouts
  • Comfortable and safe spaces
  • A kitchen with soothing sounds and smells
  • Pets welcome
  • Lots of natural light and areas for fresh air
  • Adaptive design features (to help with recognition)
