Located in the heart of Redwood City, between San Francisco and Silicon Valley, we’re proud to offer more than just jobs—we offer purpose-driven careers in a compassionate community. And yes, resumé gaps are okay.

What matters most is your heart, willingness to serve others, and desire to be part of something meaningful. Let’s talk about resumé and interview best practices to help you land your next role.

Our Promise is to love and care for your family as we do our own.

Senior living resumés: finding your purpose in care

If you’re new to senior living—or returning after time off—it helps to know what the work looks like.

Kensington Place Redwood City offers several key roles that serve both our assisted living and memory care residents, with job openings in:

  • Caregiver (CNA)/Care Partner – Memory Care
  • Licensed Vocational Nurse (LVN)
  • Private Duty Assistant
  • Memory Care Activities Assistant

Our Care Partners—certified nursing assistants (CNAs) or caregivers—are at the heart of what we do. In memory care, you’ll work with residents with Alzheimer’s or dementia. You’ll help them with daily tasks such as dressing, bathing, and dining while encouraging meaningful engagement and emotional connection.

In roles like Private Duty Assistant, the focus shifts to personalized, one-on-one care for individual residents in assisted living and memory care. These positions are advantageous for those who want to form close bonds with the people they serve.

The LVN position is key in medication management, health monitoring, and physician coordination. It’s ideal for someone with clinical experience who thrives in a leadership role.

And if you’re the creative type, our Memory Care Activities Assistant position allows you to lead engaging programs—think music therapy, crafts, and brain games—all designed to improve residents’ well-being and spark joy.

No matter the role, we’re looking for people with kindness, patience, communication skills, and a desire to build real relationships with our residents.

Resumé and interview best practices for senior living careers

Your resumé doesn’t have to be perfect. What matters most is showing who you are and why you want to work in this field.

But a few simple tweaks can make your application stand out. Let’s look at some resumé and interview best practices.

Embrace your resumé gap

Many people shy away from applying because of a gap in their employment history. Please don’t let that stop you.

At Kensington Place Redwood City, we know life doesn’t follow a straight line. Whether you were caregiving for a family member, going back to school, or just taking a much-needed break, you still bring value to the table.

If you feel comfortable, include a brief note on your resumé to explain your gap: “2021–2023: Full-time caregiver for a family member. Gained hands-on experience with daily living support and memory care.”

You’d be surprised how often this experience is more relevant than a traditional job title. Senior living resumés should focus on both hard and soft skills, and real-life caregiving counts.

Focus on soft skills and people-first qualities

Sure, having a CNA certification or prior experience is great, but we’re equally interested in qualities such as:

  • Empathy and patience, especially for memory care
  • Strong communication with residents, families, and coworkers
  • Teamwork, because this job is never done alone
  • Time management, especially during busy mealtimes or shift changes
  • Emotional resilience, which is essential in a caregiving role

Use your resumé and interview to showcase real-life moments when you helped someone, solved a problem, or supported a team.

Bring multiple copies and prep ahead

Even if you’ve already submitted your application online, bring several printed copies of your resumé.

Hiring managers may pass your resumé around during group interviews, especially for Care Partner roles.

A few extra interview prep tips:

  • Dress for the job. Business casual is usually best—neat, clean, and comfortable.
  • Arrive 5–10 minutes early, but not too early. It shows respect for the team’s time.
  • Know who you’re meeting. Review the Kensington Place website, and read about us and discover our Promise.

Group interviews: What to expect and how to shine

You may be invited to a group interview if you’re applying for caregiving roles. These interviews are designed to assess your interaction with others, including your teamwork, listening skills, and ability to connect.

Here’s what you can expect:

  • A small group setting with other applicants
  • Discussion questions about caregiving scenarios
  • Simple role-playing or collaborative tasks
  • Opportunities to ask questions about the job

Our advice? Be yourself. Listen actively. Share your thoughts clearly and respectfully. If you don’t have experience, that’s okay—your attitude and presence say a lot.
